36th CIFF Grants Italian Animator Simone Massi the Naguib Mahfouz Lifetime Achievement Award (The Golden Pyramid)
Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) has announced Italian animator Simone Massi a festival honoree in its 36th edition. Running through November 9-18, the festival will grant Massi will be granted the honorary Naguib Mahfouz Lifetime Achievement Award (The Golden Pyramid) in recognition of his extensive cinematic record that has contributed to the art of filmmaking and the industry.
Named after the Noble Prize laureate Nahuib Mahfouz, this year's edition of CIFF grants the award to a selection of the world's finest filmmakers and film stars including; Moroccan filmmaker Noureddin Sail, German director Volker Schlondorff, French auteur Jack Lang and Egyptian actress Nadia Lotfy, whose photo graces the official poster of the 36th edition of the festival.
Simone Massi is the first animator to receive CIFF's honorary award. He is one of the latest pioneers of "stop motion" animation, and has won over 200 awards in major festivals in Italy and abroad. He is also considered one of the most important directors of animated short films at the international level.
An adept independent animator, Massi does not use computers in his work; he draws everything by hand, using pencils, charcoal, pastels, and graphite. His works have been screened in 60 countries and were shown at several international film events. His latest work, The Wait of May, will be screened in the opening night of CIFF. The 8-minute short animated picture has been screened in Venice Film Festival 2014.
